If we were having coffee…

…I would tell you about the people I’m holding in my heart this week: Little Red, who spent 10 days in intensive care, but is now getting better ever day; Action Girl, who is struggling with a difficult diagnosis; Uncle Mason, whose wife died last night. I would tell you how much I feel for them and their families, but at the same time how life goes on. There are primroses in the hedges, lambs in the field. The children have to eat. The clothes have to be washed. I have seeds to plant.

Even in times of stress and sadness there are rhythms and rituals that keep us safe. The actions of our hands, the movement from sink to stove to table, the digging, the sowing. We keep ourselves sane by keeping ourselves in the moment.

About sarahsouthwest

I'm now in my early 50s. I started writing again as a way of exploring the world, and feel that over the last 2 years I have really grown as a writer. By day I work with children and young people with mental health difficulties. I juggle my own two children, my work, my writing practice, generally managing to keep all the balls up in the air.

“We keep ourselves sane by keeping ourselves in the moment.” So true, no matter what present stress or challenge may be tugging at us.
