I haven’t confessed to Husband yet, but I still only cycle with one cleat. Otherwise I get scared of falling over sideways. In my defence, I have fallen over sideways every time I’ve been out with my cleats – until today. With my sneaky lopsided cleating arrangement, I have managed to stay upright. Now I just have to conquer my fear of going downhill.
So, we covered 37km today. I had got that worked out in miles, but I’ve forgotten now. I know we did and extra bit, then a route we’ve done before, and then an extra bit, and all of it was faster. And I only had to get off on one hill.
After the cycle ride we picked up Lurtz and went to the beach. Westward Ho! is normally a flat expanse of golden sand. After the recent storms, it’s unrecognisable. The sand has been washed away, revealing areas of rounded stones, slabs of clay, and the stumps of old jetties sticking up out of it all. Lurtz managed to get soaked and travelled home in a pair of swimming trunks and my furry gilet. Messing around in the sea, in North Devon, in February? Chilly.
