Servicing the beast

Having a chronic illness is a bit like having a badly behaved pet. You have to take care of it, even though you might not like it very much. So this morning I went down to see my lovely lymphoedeoma nurse to have my arms measured. All is stable, which is fantastic. Lymphoedoema wa one of my big fears back in the day. Still is, actually.

Anyhow, I haven’t seen her for a while, because she was off having her own mastectomy and reconstruction. It was lovely to catch up, and really inspirational to see how she has taken her own experiences and is using them to improve the service for patients like me. It is wonderful to see someone with passion for their work.

About sarahsouthwest

I'm now in my early 50s. I started writing again as a way of exploring the world, and feel that over the last 2 years I have really grown as a writer. By day I work with children and young people with mental health difficulties. I juggle my own two children, my work, my writing practice, generally managing to keep all the balls up in the air.
